There is a myth about the building of the Fyrish Monument, relating to the commissioning of it by Sir Hector Munro. It is said that Sir Munro was a generous man, looking to help the local villagers in their time of unemployment. As the villagers would not take his charity, he instead paid them, as noted, to build the monument. The myth goes that after the villagers had transported the large boulders that the monument is made out of to the top of the hill it is situated on, Sir Hector Munro (presumably with help) rolled all of the stones down the hill again. He could then pay the villagers double the amount for them having to complete the task twice. There are other structures around Fyrish and the original plan was to have them all linked by a dyke. Below are some photos of two other structures that are about 15 and 25 minutes walk from Fyrish. I have not got around to making statues of these yet.

The second monument (2nd fyrish) can be seen clearly while driving west on the Ballachcraggan road (B817), sited to the lower left while looking up at Fyrish. It can also be seen from the Fyrish monument, looking down and to the west. The problem with finding the 2nd Fyrish is that due to the terrane it can only be seen from a distance, when you get near it there is no track at all and you don’t even know your near it. But here’s a tip that I got from Bush Tucker Murphy and I’ve tried it and as usual Big Murph is spot on. BTM tip : Start off from Fyrish and follow the track down the west slope and wander along for about 15 minutes and when you think your in the vicinity of the 2nd monument keep an eye on Fyrish which will be viewed looking east up the hill, keep walking until you can see daylight appear through the center arch of Fyrish, at this point it’s time to leave the track and climb up through the heather and trees. It’s about 40 yards and rough going, and don’t expect to see it till your right next to it - good luck. The 3rd fyrish is much easier to find. It can be viewed from the 2nd Fyrish looking in the direction of Evanton atop of the next hill. From the second monument continue south along the forestry track for about 10 minutes and it’s situated at the top of the hill which will be in front of you when you reach a cross roads in the forestry track. |
